Complete Guide to Underfloor Heating

There are many benefits to underfloor heating; it’s a treat for bare feet, makes room layouts more flexible as there is no need for radiators and it can be a cost-efficient way to heat your home. If you’re trying to make your home more sustainable then underfloor heating works well with renewable heating sources.

What are the different types of underfloor heating?

There are two types of underfloor heating systems: warm water or wet. These both run through pipes as part of the heating system and electric.

Warm water buried underfloor heating:

This involves burying 1.6cm pipes into the floor screed, the screed is then finished in your selected covering and the zoned system is controlled by a manifold. This is the most efficient way as there are low running costs, however it required a complete overhaul of the existing floor structure so would be best suited to new builds or extensions.

Warm water surface-mounted underfloor heating:

If you don’t want to dig out your floor structure then you can choose a warm water surface-mounted underfloor heating, this is insulated panels with channels routed out for 1.2cm pipes to sit in, this will add 1.5cm to the floor height and use warm water in the same way as the buried system.

Electric:

This system will not raise floor levels and is a popular choice when heating single rooms. Electric systems consists of matting on to which cables connect into homes electrical circuit. However, there is a higher running cost with an electric system compared to a water system.

Is underfloor heating the best option for me?

UFH is effective for large open-place spaces, especially if you have higher ceilings in your home. The entire floor will radiate heat upwards allowing for an even room temperate and reducing draughts, moisture levels and airborne allergens.

There is a limit to the floor temperature an underfloor heating system can operate comfortably at, if you have very small rooms where the ratio of floor area to room volume is low then it might not be as effective.
