Liquid screed drying times
There are numerous advantages to working with liquid screed. These can include its self-levelling qualities, blemish eradication and the efficiency of installation.
The drying process of liquid screed is quicker to that of traditional screeding. This is due to the enhanced strength of the flow screed, making it more durable even when more thinly spread.
Whilst the speedy drying times are fairly consistent, no two installation environments are the same. Therefore the drying will also depend on temperature, moisture and humidity.
Three stages to the drying process:
First 24 – 48 hours
This is the most important period for the drying process. Once the pour is complete the liquid screed needs to be left untouched for at least 24 hours. During this time, all windows should be kept closed to ensure quicker drying times. At the end of this period the floor is usually dry enough to walk on
Post 48 hours
After 48 hours the ventilation works opposite to the first 24 hours. In this stage it’s important to leave all doors and windows open. This will help harden the screed whilst creating a quicker drying process. The higher the temperate and the lower the humidity the faster the drying time. On average, liquid screed dries at the rate of 1mm per day for the first 40mm and 0.5mm per day for any additional depth.
After one week of natural drying, liquid screed can be forced dried. If the liquid screed is being used in conjunction with underfloor heating, the water pipes can be used to speed up the drying time. The temperate should start at 25 ℃ and over 3 days gradually raise to 55 ℃ for another 4 days. Humidity should be kept to a minimum throughout the force drying period, so good ventilation is essential.
On the other hand, if your liquid screed is being used as a foundation layer to a flooring finish you can use a dehumidifier. It’s important to work out the rough number of humidifiers needed to work effectively for the space in which the screed has been laid.
